Course: Peer Support for Students with Disabilities

Peer Support for Students with Disabilities* is a university course open to all students enrolled in undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate programmes at any constituent unit of the University of Zagreb. The aim of the course is to prepare students to provide meaningful and appropriate peer support to students with disabilities in the academic environment.

The course lasts one semester. The preparatory workshop is held at the beginning of the semester over two weekends (Friday, Saturday and Sunday). Peer support activities and regular group consultations (supervision), within Models A and B, are carried out during the semester according to need and agreement.

The course is delivered through three models (A, B and C):

A. Preparatory workshop (15 lecture hours + 30 practical hours) and peer support provision (75 practical hours + 15 hours of group consultations): 5 ECTS credits (2 ECTS credits for the preparatory workshop/training and 3 ECTS credits for peer support provision during one semester). Credits are recorded as “pass”. Student performance is not graded.

B. Peer support provision (75 practical hours + 15 hours of group consultations): 3 ECTS credits. This model refers to peer support provision during one semester. Prerequisite: previously completed Model A or C. Credits are recorded as “pass”. Student performance is not graded.

C. Preparatory workshop (15 lecture hours + 30 practical hours): 2 ECTS credits. This model includes the preparatory workshop/training only. The competencies acquired are assessed through active participation in the workshop and an oral examination, and are graded.

*For the purposes of this course, students with disabilities include students with motor impairments, chronic illnesses, visual impairments, hearing impairments, dyslexia, dysgraphia, dyscalculia, ADHD, Asperger syndrome, and mental health conditions or disorders, who require peer support and agree to receive support from a fellow student.

Examples of support in the academic environment include assistance with arriving at the faculty, moving around faculty premises, taking lecture notes, completing administrative procedures, following classes (for example, through verbal description of visual content), support in various social situations such as communication mediation, reviewing written assignments, being present in stressful situations, providing information and guidance, and offering personal support according to individual needs and agreement.
