The Erasmus+ project Fictional Science – Förderung von Textkompetenz im kritischen Umgang mit Fake News has been awarded the European Language Label 2026 (Europäisches Sprachensiegel 2026). The project was coordinated by the University of Graz, with project partners including Deutsches Haus-Kyiv in Ukraine, the University of West Bohemia in Pilsen, and the Faculty of Croatian Studies of the University of Zagreb. The project was led by Dr Lucia Miškulin Saletović and was implemented from December 2022 to December 2025.
The primary objective of the project was to develop an innovative approach to fostering critical textual competence. Among other elements, the approach is based on activities and procedures designed to activate and develop the cognitive competences required to recognise and critically address various forms of manipulation and disinformation. This approach was implemented through 16 teaching modules and a digital platform for the teaching and learning of German as a first, second, and foreign language.
In addition to these teaching materials, the project produced a range of resources for multipliers in the education sector, including an e-learning course, a podcast series, an online game, and video materials. The FiSci Handbook, edited and co-authored by Dr Lucia Miškulin Saletović, provides a comprehensive overview of the project outcomes, explains the underlying didactic approach and theoretical framework, and offers practical recommendations for their use in teaching. The European Language Label is awarded to initiatives that promote innovative approaches and methods in language teaching and learning while encouraging multilingualism and intercultural awareness across Europe. It recognises some of the most innovative language-learning and educational projects implemented within the Erasmus+ programme.
The specific objectives of the European Language Label include promoting excellence in foreign language teaching, supporting the improvement of language-teaching standards throughout Europe, and raising awareness of European cooperation in the field of language teaching and learning at all levels of education.
The European Language Label is awarded as a separate category within the European Innovative Teaching Award (EITA). The official award ceremony will take place in Vienna on 8 October 2026.
