FHS Faculty Members at an International Conference in Cambridge

Faculty members of the Faculty of Croatian Studies presented their research at the annual Generative AI in Education conference held in Cambridge. The event brought together scholars and industry representatives to discuss issues of inclusivity and equity in the application of generative artificial intelligence (AI) in education, examining how AI can enhance educational processes and ensure equal opportunities for all learners.

Assistant Professor Erik Brezovec delivered a presentation titled Stabilizing Truth in Educational Sciences: A Systematic Review of Generative AI in Education, in which he presented the results of a thematic analysis of recent studies on artificial intelligence in educational contexts. He highlighted that the majority of research can be categorized within the fields of educational sciences (pedagogy), computer science, and health sciences, with as many as two-thirds of the studies focusing on higher education. This finding points, on one hand, to the uneven representation of research in areas such as vocational education and adult education, but on the other hand, it suggests significant potential for the use of artificial intelligence at advanced levels of education as a form of support in learning, especially for students with special educational needs.

Teaching Assistant Katarina Jelić presented a paper entitled Advancements and Concerns in AI-Driven Psychotherapy, summarizing the key benefits and limitations of AI-based tools in psychotherapy. While AI offers the possibility of broader accessibility of services and reduced waiting times, as well as lowering administrative burdens for service providers, its inherent risks lie in the lack of emotional authenticity, concerns about user data privacy, and potential algorithmic biases affecting specific user groups. This underscores the importance of aligning AI-driven innovations with professional ethical standards from the design phase onwards and ensuring human oversight across all processes involving AI tools.
