The Faculty of Croatian Studies of the University of Zagreb is organising the 5th International Scientific Conference “Ethics, Bioethics and Sport”, which will take place on 6 and 7 May 2026 in the Faculty Library at the Borongaj University Campus.
The organiser and initiator of the conference is Assoc. Prof. Matija Mato Škerbić, PhD, President of the European Association for the Philosophy of Sport (EAPS). The conference has established itself as a unique event in the international context, owing to its strong interdisciplinary approach and its focus on the most relevant contemporary debates in the fields of philosophy, ethics and the bioethics of sport. It brings together distinguished regional and international scholars from the fields of the philosophy of sport, bioethics, biology, medicine and kinesiology.
Over the course of its five editions, the conference has become the leading regional event of its kind and has also gained recognition in the broader international context, particularly due to its focus on the bioethics of sport — a field in which some of the key issues of contemporary sport intersect: from transgender and intersex participation, doping and anti-doping, new technologies and various forms of performance enhancement, to questions of vulnerability and the preservation of the integrity of sport, as well as that of female and male athletes.
Special emphasis is placed on plenary lectures by leading international scholars in the philosophy of sport:
Javier López Frías (Utah State University, USA), who will address the emotional dimensions of sport;
Emily Ryall (University of Gloucestershire, United Kingdom), who will focus on issues of risk and athlete autonomy;
Alberto Carrió (Pompeu Fabra University, Spain), who will analyse the relationship between sport and new technologies, including artificial intelligence.
Among regional scholars, particular mention should be made of Assoc. Prof. Miloš Marković, PhD (University of Belgrade), who will present, in his plenary lecture, research on ethical challenges in elite sport, with special emphasis on gymnastics disciplines.
The conference programme covers a range of topical issues, including the ethics of performance, gender issues, athletes’ rights, doping, and the role of new technologies in sport.
The conference is open to the public, and the detailed schedule is available via the link in the Book of Abstracts.
