Prof. Šime Demo Delivered a Lecture on Macaronic Literature in Bassano del Grappa, Italy

At the invitation of the International Association for Folenghian Studies (Associazione Internazionale per gli Studi Folenghiani "Amici di Merlin Cocai"), Prof. Šime Demo delivered a lecture on May 24, 2025, entitled “Da Cipada a Ragusa di Dalmazia. Un breve viaggio attraverso l’Europa macaronica” in Bassano del Grappa, the seat of the Association. This town lies near the place where Teofilo Folengo, the greatest macaronic poet, passed away in 1544. As a scholar recognized for his contributions to the study of Folengo's legacy, Prof. Demo was, the following day, granted the honor—according to long-standing tradition—of crowning the bust of Teofilo Folengo with a laurel wreath. The ceremony took place in the monastery of Santa Croce in nearby Campese, the poet’s burial site.

In addition to discussions on past and ongoing Folenghian research, a future collaboration was agreed upon: the publication of an Italian edition of the macaronic poems by Đuro Ferić, which were originally published in the 2019 volume Macaronica Croatica in Split. Notably, in his poem Descriptio Cuccagnae, Ferić appears to have drawn inspiration from one of the engravings produced by the renowned early modern publishing house Remondini, based in Bassano.
