Ivan Perkov was born in 1989 in Split. He completed his undergraduate studies in sociology at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Split in 2010, with a final thesis entitled “Political Engagement of Youth in Split”. He obtained his Master’s degree in sociology in 2013 at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, University of Zagreb, defending a thesis entitled “Europeanisation of the Croatian Security Discourse” (supervisor: Mirko Bilandžić). From 2017 to 2021, he attended the postgraduate doctoral programme in sociology at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, University of Zagreb, and in 2021 defended his doctoral dissertation entitled “Social Aspects of the Waste Management System in Zagreb” (supervisors: Anka Mišetić and Ognjen Čaldarović). He is a recipient of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences Excellence Scholarship for doctoral studies.
From 2014 to 2017, he was employed at the Rectorate of the University of Zagreb. Since 2017, he has been employed at the Department of Sociology, Faculty of Croatian Studies, initially as a research assistant and, since 2022, as an assistant professor in the field of social sciences, discipline of sociology, sub-discipline of special sociologies. His main areas of scientific and professional interest include urban sociology, sociology of risk, political sociology, and social ecology. He is the course leader of several courses at the Department of Sociology, among which the courses “Risk Society”, launched in collaboration with the renowned Dutch professor Joost van Loon, and “Holocaust”, developed in collaboration with Professor Renato Matić, stand out. Since 2026, he has also been the course leader of “Culture Wars: Challenges for Contemporary Sociology”, taught within the module Advanced Sociological Theories (Fortgeschrittene Soziologische Theorien) at the prestigious German university Katholische Universität Eichstätt-Ingolstadt.
For more than a decade, he worked as an editor in academic journalism at the Croatian University Newspaper Universitas, where he published numerous thematic features, analyses, and interviews with prominent members of the academic community. He participated in the establishment of the first Croatian student portal, studentski.hr. He regularly publishes popular-scientific and analytical articles in daily and weekly newspapers and appears in radio and television programmes. In 2023, he received the Award for Young Scientists and Artists granted by the Society of University Teachers and Other Scientists in Zagreb.
From 2022 to 2024, he served as Vice-Dean for Business Affairs at the Faculty of Croatian Studies. He is active in professional associations and is a member of the Croatian Bioethics Society, the Croatian Philosophical Society, the American Sociological Association, and the European Sociological Association. He is also an active member of Matica hrvatska, a central Croatian cultural institution, and serves as Secretary of its Department of Sociology.
He has published numerous articles in scientific journals and edited volumes of international conferences and has participated as a presenter at more than 25 international scientific conferences. He is the author of the book “Društvo otpada” (Waste Society, 2022).
He is married and the father of three children.
