Ivan Perkov was born in Split in 1989. He completed his undergraduate studies in sociology at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Split in 2010, with a thesis entitled “Political Engagement of Young People in Split”, and obtained his MA in Sociology in 2013 from the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Zagreb, where he defended his master’s thesis “Europeanization of the Croatian Security Discourse” (supervisor: Mirko Bilandžić). From 2017 to 2021, he attended the postgraduate doctoral programme in sociology at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Zagreb, and in 2021 defended his doctoral dissertation entitled “Social Aspects of the Waste Management System in Zagreb” (supervisors: Anka Mišetić and Ognjen Čaldarović). He was awarded a Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences scholarship for excellence in doctoral studies.
From 2014 to 2017, he was employed at the Rectorate of the University of Zagreb, and since 2017 he has been employed at the Department of Sociology of the Faculty of Croatian Studies, first as a teaching and research assistant and, since 2022, as an Assistant Professor. His research and professional interests include urban sociology, sociology of space, sociology of risk, political sociology, and social ecology. He is the course coordinator for a number of courses at the Department of Sociology, including Risk Society, which he established in cooperation with the distinguished Dutch professor Joost van Loon, and The Holocaust, established in cooperation with Professor Renato Matić. As part of his professional development in Holocaust education and memory studies, in April 2026 he participated in an international educational seminar in Berlin organised by the House of the Wannsee Conference Memorial and Educational Site, and in August of the same year he participated in a professional development programme in Thessaloniki organised in cooperation with Yad Vashem – The World Holocaust Remembrance Center.
Since 2026, he has been the course coordinator for Culture Wars: Challenges for Contemporary Sociology, taught within the Advanced Sociological Theories module (Fortgeschrittene Soziologische Theorien) at the renowned German university Katholische Universität Eichstätt-Ingolstadt.
For more than a decade, he was involved in academic journalism as an editor of the Croatian university newspaper Universitas, where he published numerous thematic features, analyses, and interviews with prominent members of the academic community. He participated in launching studentski.hr, Croatia’s first student news portal. He regularly publishes popular science and analytical articles in daily and weekly newspapers and appears on radio and television programmes. In 2023, he received the Young Scientists and Artists Award presented by the Association of University Teachers and Other Scientists in Zagreb.
From 2022 to 2024, he served as Vice-Dean for Business Operations at the Faculty of Croatian Studies. He is active in professional associations and is a member of the Croatian Bioethics Society, the Croatian Philosophical Society, the American Sociological Association, and the European Sociological Association. Since 2026, he has been a member of the international Editorial Review Board of European Societies, the official journal of the European Sociological Association.
He is an active member of Matica hrvatska, one of Croatia’s central cultural and identity institutions, and serves as Secretary of its Department of Sociology.
He has published numerous papers in academic journals and proceedings of international conferences and has presented at more than 30 international scientific conferences.
He is the author of the book Waste Society (Društvo otpada, 2022).
He is married and has three children.
