Description:
The aim of the course is to introduce the specific components of the history of Dubrovnik, its fundamental economic, political, social and cultural peculiarities. The importance of the Balkan and Mediterranean areas as a broader context of Croatian medieval and modern history will be highlighted.
The urban genesis of the city and the socio-economic dynamics of Dubrovnik's medieval period are explained, as well as the changes that occurred in the early modern period. The rich and multi-layered heritage of Dubrovnik as a centuries-old economic and cultural center is described. The institutional and political (aristo-republican) structures of the Dubrovnik state as a unique state and legal entity in the Croatian territory are recognized and evaluated.

2. The emergence and earliest history of Dubrovnik
3. Dubrovnik under Byzantine rule
4. Communal development during the Venetian rule
5. The period of Hungarian-Croatian rule
6. The formation of social structures and the construction of an aristocratic republican order
7. Latent conflicts and the schism of the patriciate
8. Between East and West: the Republic of Dubrovnik as a maritime power
9. Consular and diplomatic relations of the Republic with other countries
10. The earthquake of 1667 and its consequences
11. Dubrovnik in the 18th century
12. The collapse of the Republic of Dubrovnik in 1808
13. The provincial role of Dubrovnik as part of Austrian Dalmatia in the 19th century
14. Rounding off national integration processes and the phenomenon of Catholic Serbs
15. Concluding lesson ? recapitulation, review of sources and literature
Learning outcomes:
  1. Explain the historical and geopolitical prerequisites and specificities of the emergence and development of the Dubrovnik Commune, later the Republic.
  2. Analyze the key social and economic processes that led to the rise of the city-state
  3. Define the basic components of political power and social strata in the Dubrovnik Republic.
  4. Compare the order in the Dubrovnik Republic with neighboring states and empires
  5. Interpret the reasons for the centuries-long success of Dubrovnik's politics and diplomacy.
  6. Analyze the economic rise, especially shipping as the foundation of Dubrovnik's economy.
  7. Assess the importance of the Dubrovnik Republic as a Croatian historical affirmation.
  8. Explain the consequences of the collapse of the Dubrovnik Republic on the development of the city
