Ivan Perkov Discusses Foreign Workers in Jutarnji list

On Saturday, 27 June, Jutarnji list published an interview by journalist Doris Vučić with Assistant Professor Ivan Perkov, PhD, from the Department of Sociology at the Faculty of Croatian Studies, University of Zagreb, discussing the findings of a study on foreign taxi drivers and food delivery workers in Zagreb.

The interview was prompted by the publication of the scientific article "Work, Eat, Sleep, Repeat: Experiences of Foreign Taxi Drivers and Food Delivery Workers in Zagreb” in the journal Kroatologija, authored by Ivan Perkov, Nikola Švenda, and Ana Budimir. The study is based on 44 interviews with foreign workers from Nepal, India, Egypt, the Philippines, Syria, Bangladesh, and the United Arab Emirates.

In the interview, Perkov pointed out that foreign workers in Zagreb often work extremely long hours, live in inadequate and overcrowded accommodation, and send a large share of their earnings to support their families in their countries of origin. He also highlighted the particularly vulnerable position of workers who come to Croatia through recruitment agencies and stressed the need for stronger oversight of employers, employment agencies, accommodation conditions, and compliance with labour rights.

Perkov emphasized that foreign workers should not be viewed merely as a labour force, but as people who live and work in Croatia and are gradually becoming part of Croatian society. In this sense, the research raises important sociological questions concerning migration, work, social integration, inequality, and the dignity of life in contemporary Croatia.
