The Department of Sociology was established in 1992 and is one of the core disciplines of the Faculty of Croatian Studies. The concept of sociology studies focuses on the application of sociological theories and social science methodology for understanding social processes and phenomena in the specific context of Croatian society and comparatively in a European and global perspective. The study of sociology aims to train highly qualified sociological research personnel with professional research and analytical skills necessary for productive work in the public and private sectors. The sociology program at the bachelor's and master's levels is organized according to current international scientific standards.
As part of the DIGI-HR institutional project and the doctoral studies programme of the Faculty of Croatian Studies, University of Zagreb, Dong-Hyu Kim from the Adam Smith Business School, University of Glasgow, will deliver a guest lecture on Monday, 15 June, at 4:00 PM in the Library of the Faculty of Croatian Studies.
The lecture, entitled “Coding the Social: Standardization and Digitalization through the Lens of Luhmann's Social Systems Theory,” will examine the processes of standardization and digitalization through the framework of Niklas Luhmann’s social systems theory. Particular attention will be given to the role of standards, digital technologies, and artificial intelligence in shaping contemporary social and organizational processes, as well as their impact on innovation, technology governance, and digital transformation.
About Dong-Hyu Kim
Dr. Dong-Hyu Kim is a Senior Lecturer in Management at the Adam Smith Business School, University of Glasgow, and a member of the School’s Innovation, Strategy and Operations research cluster. He earned his PhD in Strategy and Organization from Yonsei University in South Korea, where he was awarded the prestigious Global PhD Fellowship.
His research interests include standardization, digital technology policy, AI governance, innovation, patents, catch-up strategies, and entrepreneurial ecosystems, with a particular focus on applying Niklas Luhmann’s social systems theory to the study of technology and standardization.
Dr. Kim has held visiting scholar positions at several distinguished institutions and is the author of numerous publications in leading international journals. His recent research focuses on symbolic trust in AI governance, user interactions with generative artificial intelligence, and the relationship between standardization and innovation.
He currently serves as Associate Editor of the journal Kybernetes, where he contributes to the development of systems-theoretical approaches to the study of technology, innovation, and digital transformation.
