The Department of Sociology was established in 1992 and is one of the core disciplines of the Faculty of Croatian Studies. The concept of sociology studies focuses on the application of sociological theories and social science methodology for understanding social processes and phenomena in the specific context of Croatian society and comparatively in a European and global perspective. The study of sociology aims to train highly qualified sociological research personnel with professional research and analytical skills necessary for productive work in the public and private sectors. The sociology program at the bachelor's and master's levels is organized according to current international scientific standards.
The Department of Sociology at the Faculty of Croatian Studies, University of Zagreb, invites all interested participants to attend the international online round table “Migrant Workers in Southeast Europe – Economic Inclusion and Social Exclusion,” which will take place on Thursday, June 11, from 7:30 PM to 8:30 PM Croatian time via Zoom.
The round table will be moderated by Associate Professor Marica Marinović Golubić, PhD, from the Department of Sociology, Faculty of Croatian Studies, University of Zagreb.
Since 2021, Croatia has experienced a significant increase in the arrival of workers from South Asia, particularly from Nepal, India, Bangladesh, and the Philippines. At the same time, due to the emigration of Croatian workers to more developed European Union member states and the growing needs of the domestic economy, demand for foreign labor has increased substantially, especially in the construction, tourism, and hospitality sectors.
The round table will address the economic inclusion of migrant workers in the Croatian labor market, as well as the challenges of their social integration. Particular attention will be given to language barriers, access to institutions and public services, the role of employment agencies, and the risks of social isolation and marginalization.
The event is organized within the framework of the institutional research project DIGI-HR and the international collaboration between the Faculty of Croatian Studies, University of Zagreb, and the University of Arkansas at Little Rock.
