From the Faculty to the Classroom and Community: Bruno Bogović on Connecting School, Culture, and Heritage

Bruno Bogović graduated in Sociology and History from the Faculty of Croatian Studies, University of Zagreb, where he is currently pursuing a postgraduate doctoral programme in History. He works as a teacher of Politics and Economics and Financial Literacy at the Second Gymnasium Varaždin and also teaches History at the Secondary Vocational School Varaždin.

Alongside his teaching, he is actively involved in educational and civic projects. Until recently, he coordinated the European Parliament Ambassador School (EPAS) programme at the Second Gymnasium Varaždin. He also participates in the long-term project Tracing Local and National Identity, implemented jointly by the “Puma” 7th Guards Brigade Veterans Association and the Second Gymnasium Varaždin.

As a mentor at the Varaždin County Centre of Excellence for National History, he played a prominent role in co-designing and implementing the project to erect a monument to King Tomislav in Varaždin in 2025—the first such monument unveiled to mark the 1,100th anniversary of the Croatian Kingdom. As an independent expert, he also contributed to developing a set of questions for Pig is Big, a pilot project for secondary school students in Varaždin aimed at establishing a multi-level student competition in Politics and Economics. He has also been involved in subsequent activities related to proposing the project to the Croatian Education and Teacher Training Agency.

He is the author and co-author of several academic and professional papers, popular science articles, and interviews published in Croatian journals, and has participated in numerous national and international conferences. He is a recipient of the University of Zagreb Rector’s Award in the interdisciplinary field of science, as well as multiple Dean’s Awards from the Faculty of Croatian Studies.

In his academic and professional work, he systematically connects classroom practice with local history, with a particular focus on the cultural and economic history of the 20th century. He is also actively involved in volunteering with students and young people through projects that promote education, culture, and social inclusion.
