Description:
The aim of this course is to acquaint students with institutional and non-institutional trials and proceedings for magical crimes in the European and Croatian historical context during the Middle Ages and the Early Modern period. The course will address their foundations and prerequisites from the perspectives of history, ethnology, cultural anthropology, and theology, focusing on the historical development of the legal understanding of magical practices as crimes. It will analyze key figures, works, and events that influenced the initiation, course, and conclusion of this phenomenon in both the European and Croatian historical setting. In this way, students will learn to use historiographical literature and become familiar with contemporary theories on the phenomenology of trials for magical crimes as one of the more controversial phenomena in European and Croatian history.
Learning outcomes:
  1. Explain theoretical approaches to the study of trials for magical crimes.
  2. Define all concepts from the phenomenology of trials for magical crimes covered in the course.
  3. Interpret the mutual influences between Europe and the Croatian historical context in matters of magical crimes.
