Description:
Introduce foreign students to:
- theoretical approaches and concepts in the context of contemporary international migration movements,
- new approaches for researching determinants of international migration processes,
- causes/motives and consequences of modern international migration to the country of origin and destination country,
- spatial and temporal dynamics and specifics of international migration flows,
- causes and consequences of mass migration flows to Europe,
- characteristics of external migration of the Republic of Croatia and the causes and consequences of modern migration movements of Croats,
- characteristics of external migration of Bosnia and Herzegovina and the emigration of Croats from Bosnia and Herzegovina,
- development and security aspects of international migration movements,
- spatial labour movements and immigration policies.

Learning outcomes at the level of the programme to which the course contributes:
Retrieve, understand, interpret, project and generally analytically use data on Croatian and world population and emigration, including qualitative and quantitative indicators, all relevant research results and be able to discuss and defend their validity and objectivity.
Develop a critical attitude towards statistical and other data and literature relevant to research on the population and Croatian emigrants and all the structures they shape in space, time, society, economy and numerous activities.
To train students for terminological understanding of demographic and emigrant terms and their use in professional-scientific and public explication of problems and especially for the application of analytical methods and projection models in problem solving and development planning.

On successful completion of the course, students will be able to:
1. list and describe the basic theoretical approaches in researching and identifying international migrations,
2. explain the motives of contemporary international migration movements,
3. compare and explain the consequences of modern international migration on the country of origin and destination country,
4. explain the spatial and temporal dynamics and characteristics of international migration movements,
5. explain the motives and consequences of migration flows to Europe,
6. identify and explain the directions, patterns and consequences of modern migration movements of the population of the Republic of Croatia,
7. explain the directions, patterns and consequences of modern emigration of Croats from Bosnia and Hercegovina,
8. critically evaluate the connection between development and security aspects and international migration flows,
9. critically evaluate and compare the immigration policies of selected countries,
10. explain and evaluate the causes, consequences, flows and characteristics of migration movements of selected countries and their migration policies.

Course content:
1. Introductory lecture; introducing students to the structure, content and goals of the course, organization of classes, evaluation of courses and obligations.
2. International migration - definition, typology, basic concepts and new approaches to researching the phenomenon of international migration.
3. Migration theories; motives and consequences of contemporary international migration movements.
5. World migration flows - a historical overview.
6. World migration flows - modern period.
7. European migration flows - a historical overview.
8. European migration flows - modern period.
9. Euro-integration processes and international migration (free movement of people/workers, labour market liberalization and spatial inequality within the European Union).
10. Europe's migrant crisis.
11. External migration of the Republic of Croatia in the 21st century - characteristics, causes and consequences.
12. External migration of Bosnia and Herzegovina (emigration of Croats from Bosnia and Herzegovina).
13. Labour migration (global and European trends, critical review of the Republic of Croatia).
14. Migration and immigration policies.
15. Development and security aspect of international migration.

Hrvatski studiji Sveučilišta u Zagrebu pokrenuti su i ustrojeni 16. studenoga 1992., isprva samo kao dvosemestralni Sveučilišni komparativni studij hrvatske filozofije i društva. Taj je program potom preoblikovan u program redovitog četverogodišnjeg studija.
