Professor Šime Demo Participates in the 19th International Congress of the International Association for Neo-Latin Studies in Aix-en-Provence

Professor Šime Demo, PhD, of the Department of Croatian Latinity, participated in the 19th International Congress of the International Association for Neo-Latin Studies (IANLS), held from 14 to 20 July 2025 in Aix-en-Provence, France.

At the congress, he delivered a paper entitled “Epigraphic Database as a Tool for Linguistic Research: An Example of Neo-Latin Inscriptions of Istria”, presenting one of the research outcomes of the project “Early Modern Latin Stone Inscriptions in the Churches of Southern Istria: Documentation, Analysis and Contextualisation” (Croatian Science Foundation, IP-2022-10-5068), for which the Faculty of Croatian Studies serves as the host institution.

In addition, in his capacity as Chair of the IANLS Committee on Digital Resources, Professor Demo organised four successful special sessions dedicated to the application of digital technologies in Neo-Latin studies. These sessions featured a total of twelve papers presented by scholars from eight countries.

He also chaired a meeting of the Committee, presented a report on its activities over the preceding three-year period, and participated in the work of the IANLS Executive Committee as a member.

IANLS congresses have been held every three years since 1971, each time in a different host city. The Association is the leading international organisation dedicated to the study of Neo-Latin literature and its role in shaping global culture during the early modern and modern periods, through the transmission of classical and medieval heritage as well as the dissemination of new ideas.

Given the pivotal role of Latin language and culture in Croatian history, the participation of Croatian scholars in IANLS congresses and its governing bodies is of particular importance.
